How Video Can Lower Customer Acquisition Costs for Law Firms

A law firm can spend money generating inquiries and still lose time on prospects who are not a fit, or who contact another firm because they feel more confident there.

Video can help make your marketing work harder. It won’t automatically lower costs or guarantee new clients, but a strategic, consistent approach can build trust earlier, answer common questions, and help qualified prospects take the next step.

What customer acquisition cost means

Customer acquisition cost (CAC) is the amount your firm spends to bring in a new client.

CAC = acquisition spend ÷ new clients acquired

For a law firm, a click or inquiry isn’t the same as a retained client. Track the full path: marketing spend, qualified leads, consultations booked and attended, and signed retainers. The American Marketing Association’s CAC guidance also stresses using consistent definitions and time periods when comparing costs.

How video can support acquisition

When someone is considering a lawyer, they may have urgent questions: Does the firm handle cases like mine? What happens after I call? What should I bring to a consultation?

Short, clear videos can address those questions before the first conversation. Attorney introductions and process explainers also give prospects a sense of how the firm communicates and what it stands for, not just what its website looks like.

That context can help a potential client arrive better informed. It can also help your team spend less time repeating basic explanations and more time speaking with people who may be a good fit.

Make one production day go further

A single video should not have to carry your entire marketing plan. With planning, one filming day can yield 20–30 pieces of content: full-length website videos, short social clips, FAQ answers, and follow-up content for email.

That gives your firm reusable material across its website, social channels, email, and paid campaigns. Instead of starting from scratch each week, or coordinating a new shoot for every post, you have a planned library to draw from.

Consistency matters. A one-off video may introduce your firm, but regular, useful content gives prospects more opportunities to understand your approach and remember your name.

Measure results, not views

Video views can show that people watched. They do not tell you whether the content helped acquire a client.

Compare qualified consultations and retained clients alongside marketing spend. Track which videos prospects engaged with, where inquiries came from, and how many consultations became retainers. Review CAC over time, using the same measurement period and cost definitions. Consider production and distribution costs, not just ad spend.

A video campaign is more useful when the firm can connect it to business outcomes, and adjust the content or distribution when it isn’t reaching the right audience.
